It was an emotional morning at the Washington State Patrol Academy in Shelton, as dozens gathered to remember fallen Detective Brent Hanger as well as celebrate some of the agency’s best.

Memorial_DSC4402Captain Shannon Bendiksen opened up this year’s WSP Memorial Service by welcoming Chief John Batiste, his executive staff, Governor Jay Inslee, and the families of fallen Brent Hanger, Sean O’Connell Jr., and Tony Radulescu.

With the American and Washington State flag waving high above the crowd, Troopers stood at attention as they honored the memory of their fallen brothers and sister. Chief Batiste reminded them the job they have is a dangerous one but it is their service that helps keep our great state safe.

This year, fallen Detective Brent Hanger’s name was added to the marble monument that stands in the center of the Washington State Patrol Academy’s courtyard. Brent’s name – along with the names of his 28 other fallen brothers and sister – will forever be illuminated by the glow of an internal flame.Memorial_DSC4391

Following remembrance speeches from Chief Batiste and Governor Inslee, the Washington State Patrol Honor Guard performed a 21 gun salute – a sound that will forever ring in the hearts of many.

As the ceremony concluded, everyone rushed inside the gymnasium to begin the Washington State Patrol Awards Ceremony. This annual event is held to recognize currently-serving employees who distinguished themselves in 2015.

This year’s award winners are listed below. Congratulations to all and thank you to all those who attended either/or/both of today’s ceremonies.
