According to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC), an average of 40 people die each December in Washington from vehicle collisions. That means 40 friends and loved ones who sat around the Thanksgiving table will not be with us to ring in the New Year. The holiday season is a time when family and friends get together and celebrate…we want everyone to make it there safely.
From December 15, 2016 to January 1, 2017, the Washington State Patrol, along with dozens of other local law enforcement agencies from around the state, are teaming together for an extra DUI emphasis. This emphasis was funded by WTSC to increase everyone’s safety on our roads, especially during this heavy travel holiday season.
We have seen a significant increase in the number of fatalities involving drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The numbers rose from 78 fatal collisions in 2011 to 146 in 2015…There is no acceptable number of traffic fatalities in Washington State. Help us reach our Target Zero goal of zero traffic fatalities or serious injury collisions by 2030 and give the gift of life this holiday season.
Day one of our emphasis starts now.
