Washington now has eight more officers keeping its highways safe.
On Thursday, July 13, eight commercial vehicle officers were sworn in during a special ceremony at the Patrol’s Academy in Shelton.
We have been recognized as one of the best Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Programs in the country,” says Chief John R. Batiste. “Through their hard work, these Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers (CVEO) are keeping both the public and our highways safe on a daily basis.”
This was not only a special day for these eight new officers, but also for Ms. Luanne Mason. Ms. Mason is the daughter of fallen WSP Weight Control Officer Joseph Modlin.
Each year she presents the “Core Value’s” award to the CVEO who demonstrated expectation qualities, like integrity and honor, throughout the training period. This year the award went to CVEO Scott Meyers.
However, Ms. Mason also received an award of her own. Assistant Chief Jason Berry, head of the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Bureau, presented Ms. Mason with her father’s service badge.
Commercial Vehicle Officers are uniformed members of the WSP who serve under the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Bureau. CVEOs play a crucial role in keeping preserving Washington’s highway infrastructure as well as keeping the roads safe for everyone. Not only do they enforce traffic safety laws on commercial vehicles but they also perform inspections of various big rigs throughout the entire state, like school buses. WSP commercial vehicle officers are responsible for inspecting every single school bus in the state to ensure they are safe for your children. Just last year, they inspected more than 86,000 vehicles, resulting in about 15,000 drivers and/or vehicles being placed out of service for safety violations.
Over the course of 13 weeks, this Commercial Vehicle Officer Recruit Class received training in everything from firearms to commercial vehicle law.
