An Inside Look at the Washington State Patrol Academy

Through the doors of the Washington State Patrol Academy lies nearly 100 years of tradition.

Every cadet has their own story and reason for joining the WSP, but all are connected by one common goal: To make Washington State a safer and better place to live.

It takes nearly six months and more than 1,000 hours of rigorous training to earn their badges…and these cadets are only halfway through. Over the last couple of weeks, they have been learning everything from DUI detection to vehicle pursuits.

During their time at the Academy, these cadets must be away from home, deploy time management skills, and live in a paramilitary world. But all of these challenges equip these cadets with world-class training. The tough nature of the Academy can be difficult, but it also produces successful troopers.

Come November, these cadets will stand in the Capitol Building and receive their commission card from Chief John R. Batiste and Governor Jay Inslee. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as the cadets get closer to graduation.
